🦋 Personality

Has your character always believed in magic? Do they have something influencing their perspective on the supernatural/metaphysical/spiritual from their past? How do they feel about magic?
In the world of ASOIAF/ GOT magic and the supernatural does exist. In certain parts there is less of an influence, and it may just be believed to be stories, or in the case of the North, stories your wet nurse might tell, but for Ygritte, who lives outside of all of that and even more north and reclusive than the North, they weren't protected by what the Wall, which separates them, could give-- supernatural or otherwise. So beyond the fact that this is the one thing that separates her from the majority of the people in this story, it does mean an entirely separate culture.

The Free Folk believe in the old gods and they have the weirwoods. They kept the traditions of the First Men, making her people indigenous to the land. They have skinchangers, and there's far more presence of supernatural or at least of a realm and a time and something else that exists in tandem with the people that live Above the Wall. It's less a belief and more of an understated known fact. In the show specifically the showing of the wights and what they can do along with their effect on the people is apparent. The Free Folk know what they're up against, an army of undead.

If you'd like pixies to change one event in your character's life, what would it be and why?
If she never died. It would make a lot of Jon Snow's story different, and it would likely mean some sort of resolution between them. Ygritte was such a large part of Jon Snow's understanding and his own growth. It gave him experience in a lot of ways, but in order for him to get to the next part of his story as a main character, Ygritte would have to die.

But if this was her story, it would be interesting to see how she might have to survive as a part of the Free Folk that survived. Survival is integral to who they are as a people, not having access to any of the trades and resources below the Wall. Now having that, having to work with people who are so different and who have essentially helped to keep them oppressed would be interesting, especially from such an outspoken person as Ygritte. Even just beyond her relationship to Jon and her connection to him as he became Lord Commander and then King, but for her as a person to grow, to learn to adapt, to overcome her own flaws would give her an entirely different story.

What is your character's most outstanding personality trait, and why?
The biggest trait for Ygritte, and likely for most of the Free Folk, is resilience. It's not just about being resourceful, which any person stranded in such a hostile environment and growing up in that culture would have to be, but it's also about being able to still come back even when she's been knocked down. She's quick-witted, sharp-tongued, and able to fight back even physically considering she's what's known as a spearwife, a woman fighter who is trained with a spear. That alone speaks enough given how patriarchal even this society could be (though there certainly is room for powerful women given the nature of freedom and choice in this culture, but that is the point if this is what she has fought for and chosen).

She's stubborn and ambitious, but even after Jon had betrayed her, if anything it just fueled her. She pushed to go on, to continue with the attack below the Wall, because she knew there was still a chance of seeing him (and while she said she would kill him over and over again that wasn't entirely the case). Survival does matter, but so do her own wants, and she will still keep fighting from her own set of desires-- even if it does end up being her own downfall in the end.

Your character gets to return home, but when they do they learn that they've been gone for hundreds of years. How do they react?
Ygritte probably wouldn't be too shocked. The Free Folk don't have a lot of attachments, especially as nomadic as Ygritte has been with the 'soldiers' she's been fighting with under Mance. Learning about the outcome of Westeros post-death would be a lot for her to process, just because so much did change for her people in that way, but as long as the Free Folk were there, prospering, probably trading and coexisting with the North, she would be happy to see her people, knowing that what she still died for did ultimately help her people even if she was attacking the Night's Watch. It still lead to series of events that would be the end of the terror and the death of her people.

Now what that new access would bring her people would be interesting to see, an evolution of a 'free society' that may not be beholden to the North or the Starks, but on their own. She may not understand all of that, but it would be a rollercoaster of emotions that would likely end up with her still proud of her people even if her connection to specific individuals who are now dead (and some are likely anyway given the amount of battles and death). She did understand what she was fighting for.

God Houses:

Frigg - Ygritte is a spearwife, a woman warrior. She fought for her people in the midst of a war with people to the south who held misconceptions of her people. These people kidnapped children of her people. She would eventually lay down her life for this cause.

Mimir - Since Ygritte is one of the best spearwives, she's been able to survive. She's at least skilled in weaponry, tracking people and animals, and she does understand the larger goings on of her King Beyond the Wall. The biggest threat to this series starts above the Wall, where her people were treated like crap and made to survive in the harshest of climates. She's been able to not only survive but do well for herself as a spearwife. She knows what her objectives are, and even despite the doubts to Jon Snow's intentions, she still thinks she can make him loyal and keep him loyal to the Wildlings and threatens to cut his cock off.

Personality:

Abrasive. That is probably the best word to describe Ygritte. She is opinionated and she tends to not care about other people. She does things her way, and doesn't find a use for any other way. She was raised in a very different environment, raised as a wildling above the Wall. This sets her a part from most of the characters in the book as wildlings are nomadic and like the term implies, wild. They often get into small skirmishes with those south of the Wall, due to the Wall actually being there. Wildlings are indigenous to Westeros whereas most of the people in Westeros who are decendants of Andals.

Pretty much, it's a pissing contest between the North and the wildlings, since they both claim the land. But it has everything to do with how they act. Wildlings consider themselves free, taking no king unless they choose one. These are things instilled in Ygritte. She is what she fights for, freedom and land. This is why she does what she does, motivated by the idea of keeping her land and her people safe.

Ygritte is abrubt, crass. She speaks her mind. She isn't afraid to take what she wants, do as she pleases. Trying to get her to live by rules also isn't the easiest thing. Though she knows there are some limits. She also has no problem attempting to get around them, or at least stress them. In the sense that those rules are not her own, not something she chose.

Their traditions and way of life are entirely different. They look down on the Southerners as much as the Southerners look down on them. She considers herself free, not bowing to a man who simply inherited his power. Being a spearwife, she's earned the title. When we first see her, she would rather die with honor instead of fearing death or begging for her life. It's partly why Jon respects her and couldn't kill her (the other part being she was a woman).

There also is no shame. Wildlings really are free. They're open, and sex and sexuality doesn't seem to be a big thing. If you want to have it, you do. It's a way of life. If you want something, you go for it. Of course if someone tries to take something off of a wildling, expect one hell of a fight.

We mostly see her interactions with Jon. He's lost his father and has chosen his life on the Wall. Ygritte is generally obnoxious with him, especially when she finds out he's never been with a woman. The concept is baffling to her, and the more she gets to know him, the more she likes him. It doesn't come off like normal girls, flirting and being coy. No, Ygritte propositions him daily once he's believed to be a turncloak and travels with the wildlings.

She does decide to trust him though. She's incredibly loyal, both to her convictions and those she trusts. When the Night's Watch attacks the group of Wildlings, Ygritte vouches for Jon, saying they're having sex. This pretty much solidifies that he is a turncloak.

There is a softer side. It's just buried in all those furs. She does like Jon, often telling him about the wildlings. Once their relationship becomes a bit more, she even admits that she wishes they could stay in the cave forever. This is exemplified by what she tells him when she's dying. Even if she would never be a Crow's wife, she would have rather been with him, despite everything. She's not only brave in battle or when her life is on the line, but she truly does whatever her heart wishes.
